Throw Shade

HOW TO USE

Speak as Rachel
Speak as Stacey
Rachel: What are you looking at so seriously?

Stacey: My Facebook page.

Rachel: Is there something wrong?

Stacey: Some people are throwing shade at me. I hate it when people criticize others online.

Rachel: Did you say ‘throw shade'? Is that a new slang word or something?

Stacey: It's new but not very new. It just means to publicly criticize, tease, or be mean to someone. It's usually used when people do that kind of thing online.

Rachel: I see. I don't really use social media, so I am not very familiar with those kinds of words.

Stacey: How do you stay connected if you don't use social media?

Rachel: I don't stay connected. That's the point. And if looking at your Facebook page makes you angry, then you should think about quitting social media, too.

Stacey: Maybe, you're right, but there are also a lot of things I like about social media. I need to think about it.
